About CrashSaver
CrashSaver will allow you to exit to the Finder when a system error occurs by pressing
the interrupt button (not the reset button) on the programmers switch. Reasons for doing this
include preserving the contents of your RAM disk and avoiding rebooting your Macintosh.
The best way to make use of CrashSaver is to make it your startup application. When
using a RAM disk that gets automatically loaded as the startup disk, you will have to set it up
to copy CrashSaver onto the RAM disk since the RAM disk loading occurs before the startup
application is executed. Once the system is loaded, you can throw away CrashSaver from the
RAM disk. If you don't want CrashSaver to be automatically loaded (in case you are using
MacsBug) then you just simply execute the application, without making it the startup
application, when you want it to be in effect. To test if CrashSaver has been installed, simply
run the program called Crash. This program will generate a System Error. After the system
error occurs, you should press the interrupt button and be returned to the Finder.
Warning, this method will usually work, but in some cases, ExitToShell will produce
a repeated system error (this means you should still back things up to disk periodically).
I hope that you find CrashSaver to be a useful utility. Even if you do not use a RAM
disk for documents (for fear of a power failure), CrashSaver should save you some time
when you have a system error when using a RAM disk for applications or when running off
of a hard disk that must be started from the floppy drive.
You may distribute CrashSaver to others as long as original credit is given to Macazine.
Also, you must include the entire contents the folders labeled Crash Saver and Ordering from
this issue.
